- In 1949, the term "Rhythm and Blues" replaced the Billboard categoryHarlem hit parade.
- In 1956, an R&B "Top Stars of '56" tour took place, with headliners Al Hibbler, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, and Carl Perkins, whose "Blue Buede Shoes" was very popular with R&B music buyers.
- Film makers took advantage of the popularity of "rhythm and blues" musicians as "rock n roll" musicians beginning in 1956. Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Big Joe Turner, The Treniers, The Platters, The Flamingos, all made it onto the big screen.
- By the early 1960s, the music industry category previously known as rhythm and blues was being called soul music.
- Motown Records had its first million-selling single in 1960 with The Miracles' "Shop Around", and in 1961, Stax Records had its first hit with Carla Thomas' "Gee Whiz! (Look at His Eyes)".
Fashion,clothing and labels
The R&B music style comes from 50's Southern American Soul, Jazz and Rock 'n' Roll therefore some artists style originates from here.
Some examples of artists who have mixed modern style with 50's Rock 'n' Roll and southern american working style are, Andre 3000 (outkast), Janelle Monae and Cee - Lo Green. These artists make their different and stand out by using colour and more daring additions to traditional smart clothing to make it high fashion.
Other R&B Artists such as R Kelly, usher and Beyonce have changed over time and grown with their audiences, for example when they where younger they dressed to fit in with other artists in the same genre to attract an audience but now they wair more smart clothing and sometimes more daring outfits to keep their audience interested because consumers want artists to push boundaries to remain interesting. The main themes of R&B clothing are to look powerfull, gold and shiny accesories and fabrics are popular, artists like standing out from the crowd, and for men looking smart and wealthy and like they have thought about their appearance is important.
Most R&B artists don't often dress down and they aren't afraid to show others that they spend lots of money and time on their image. Some artists such as Beyonce even have their own clothing lines so that others can tap into their style, she has been known to model it on the red carpet and in her own music videos. These clothing lines are often verry successful because fashion and image is important in this genre of music .

The key brands associated with the the genre are are House of Dereon By Beyonce, Rocawear By Jay Z, Jacob&Co Jewelers, Baby Phat, and Apple Bottoms By Nelly.
Apple Bottoms mainly concentrates on jeans for women but they do produce other clothing, House of Dereon has women's and mens clothing as well as a childrens line, these all include shoes and accessories such as sunglasses. Rocawear mainly focuses on men but they do produce women's clothing aswell. Many Artists are paid to endorse products for example Beyonce works with loreal, Pepsi and Tommy Hilfiger to name a few.

Many people have set up facebook pages devoted to a specific artist or a certain genre of music. Young people are more likely to look at these than go on fan websites because it is more convinient. Origin
Origin
R&B has grown out of African American culture. It shows radical differences from the genres pioneered by Caucasian American and European cultures, such as classical music or rock 'n' roll (though the genre certainly still has ties to these styles). R&B originated from Motown in detroit in September 1959. Among early Tamla/Motown artists were Mable John, Eddie Holland and Mary Wells. "Shop Around," The Miracles' first #1 R&B hit peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1960.Motown specialized in a type of soul music it referred to with the trademark "The Motown Sound". Crafted with an ear towards pop appeal, the Motown Sound typically used: tambourinesto accent the back beat; prominent and often melodic electric bass-guitar lines; distinctive melodic and chord structures; and a call-and-response singing style that originated in gospel music. Pop production techniques such as the use of orchestral string sections, charted horn sections, and carefully arranged background vocals were also used. Complex arrangements and elaborate, melismatic vocal riffs were avoided. Motown producers believed steadfastly in the "KISS principle" (keep it simple, stupid). The style created by the Motown musicians was a major influence on several non-Motown artists of the mid-1960s, such as Dusty Springfield and The Foundations. In the United Kingdom, the Motown Sound became the basis of the northern soul movement. Smokey Robinson said the Motown Sound had little to do with Detroit
